What is a “bookee”?

Derived from the word bookmark, a bookee is a term invented by Bookeetown to describe a group of websites organized by interest.

What is a “top bookee”?

Located on the top corner of the left column, the Top Bookees contain sites you use on a daily basis. To make your life easier, Bookeetown has organized them into 4 categories: Global, Basic, Private and Business.

Global: the world’s leading sites, pre-selected for you by Bookeetown, such as Google, MSN, Microsoft, Yahoo!, eBay, AOL, Amazon, YouTube, Skype, iTunes, MySpace, Wikipedia, CNN, Expedia, SecondLife, Weather, etc. As a member, you can add your favorite sites at anytime.

Basic: your country’s most popular sites pre-selected for you by Bookeetown, such as Adobe, Ask, Citysearch, ESPN, Facebook, FedEx, New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Yellow Pages, etc. Our members can add their favorite sites to this bookee at any time.

Private: all the sites you need to run you private life. Many of these sites require a login and a password, such as “myprivatebank.com”, “mysuppliers.com”, “mytaxes.com”, “myinsvestments.com”, “mysubscriptions.com”, “myrewardprograms.com”, “myinformationsites.com”, etc.

Business: all the sites that you use daily in business, depending on your activities: “mycompany.com”, “myintranet.com”, “mybusinessbank.com”, “mycompetitors.com”, “myunion.com”, search engines, market places, portals, etc.

How do I customize my homepage on Bookeetown?

As a Bookeetown member you can choose the color of the links you add to your bookees as well as the color of your frame. Just click on customize!

You can also choose any city in the world to receive a 7-day forecast.

Bookeetown is currently available in English and French but keep checking as we will be adding many other languages in the future.

how do I change the location of my bookees on my homepage?

To move a bookee just click at the top of the bookee, drag it to the desired location and unclick.

How do I change the size of the font on Bookeetown?

You can double the font size by clicking on the A+ sign located at the top right hand corner of Bookeetown’s homepage.

Most browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) offer the option of changing font size. Just go to view (Firefox) or page (Internet Explorer) and then to text size.

How do I modify or delete a bookee?

You can modify or delete a bookee by clicking on the pencil icon located at the top right hand corner of a bookee.

How do I add a new bookee?

To add a new bookee to your homepage, simply click on the + sign located at the top right hand corner of the bookee and then follow the instructions.

How do I create a bookee in another language?

If you are using the English version of Bookeetown and want to share a bookee containing French websites for instance, all you have to do is switch to the appropriate language (go to "Language" then "French") and then create your bookee. It will immediately be made available to all French-speaking members.

How do I import my bookmarks automatically into Bookeetown?

Whether you use Internet Explorer or Firefox as a browser, you can instantly import your bookmarks into Bookeetown.

For Internet Explorer users:

To export my bookmarks from Internet Explorer

- Open your browser.

- Go to “Add to Favorites” and click on “Import & Export”.

- Click on “Next” in the window called “Welcome to the Import/Export Wizard”

- Click on “Export Favorites” then click on “Next”.

- Select “Favorites” then click on “Next”.

- Make a note of the location of the htm file called “bookmark” by default suggested in the frame “Export to a File or Address” then click on “Next”.

- Click on “Finish”. A window will open to let you know that your favorites have been successfully exported.

To import my bookmarks into Bookeetown

- On the Bookeetown website click on the vertical arrow located at the top right hand corner of the “My bookees” window (Import your bookmarks automatically).

- Click on “Browse” and choose the document “bookmark” mentioned above (unless otherwise indicated, it should be located on your Desktop).

- Click on “bookmark.htm” then click on “Open”.

- Wait a few seconds and go back to “Import your Bookmarks” on the Bookeetown website and finally click on “Import”.

- Wait a few seconds until you see your bookmarks. Select the files you want to import by clicking on the appropriate boxes and click on “Import” at the bottom of the page.

- You have successfully imported your bookmarks.

For Firefox users:

To export my bookmarks from Firefox

- Open your browser.

- Go to “Bookmarks” and then click on “Organize Bookmarks”.

- The “Bookmarks Manager” window will open. Select the “Bookmarks” file in the left column then choose “File” and click on “Export”.

- Click on “Desktop” in the left column and make note of the name of the file suggested by default in the frame “Name of the File” (usually “bookmarks”) and then click on “Save”.

- Close the “Bookmarks Manager”.

To import my bookmarks into Bookeetown

- On the Bookeetown website click on the vertical arrow located at the top right hand corner of the “My bookees” window (Import your bookmarks automatically).

How do I share a bookee created by importing my favorites into Bookeetown?

By default, all bookees created by importing your favorites into Bookeetown are programmed NOT to be shared with other members in order to preserve your privacy. If you'd like to share them with other members, click on the pencil located at the top right hand corner of the bookee (modify) and change the Share icon for each bookee.

What is the purpose of the « Add2bookeetown » button?

Buttons (also called bookmarklets) are links added to your browser's Personal Bar (Firefox) or Links Bar (Internet Explorer) to make it easier to manage your favorites. The « Add2bookeetown » button is the easiest way to add a site to a bookee.

Once installed on your browser’s Personal Bar (Firefox) or Links Bar (Internet Explorer), just click on the button each time you discover a site you want to add to one of your bookees.

How do I install the « Add2bookeetown » button on my browser’s Links or Personal Bar ?

For Internet Explorer users:

Click on the « Add2bookeetown » link located at the top of the homepage and follow the instructions:

- Right click on your browser’s Links Bar and make sure that « Links » is activated.

- Right click on the « Add2bookeetown » link located below and choose « Add to Favorites ».

- Select « Links » in the menu when asked « Create in » then click on « Add ».

- The « Add2bookeetown » button is now installed on your browser’s Links Bar.

For Firefox users:

Click on the The « Add2bookeetown » link located at the top of the homepage and follow the instructions, i.e. :

- Click on the « Add2bookeetown » link located below, drag it and drop it into your browser’s Personal Bar.

- The « Add2bookeetown » button is now installed in your browser’s Personal Bar.

How do I use the « Add2bookeetown » button?

Each time you choose to add a new site to one of your bookees click on the « Add2bookeetown » button in your browser’s Links or Personal Bar, choose the bookee to which you want to add the site, check and validate the name of the site, then click on « Add ».

The site has just been added to the desired bookee.

Can I have access to my bookees from any computer?

With Bookeetown, you are just one click away from your favorites sites wherever you are in the world and whatever computer you are using. Simply go to www.bookeetown.com and sign in. For your protection sign out if you are using a public computer.

How are links classified in bookees?

All links listed in the Global and Basic bookees are in alphabetical order followed by the links you add, which are displayed in a color you can choose by clicking on “Customize”. In the case of a shared bookee, the first links listed are the ones added by the creator of the bookee, followed by the links you add to it.

How do I benefit from the best web addresses around the world?

The “Show all bookees” function displays bookees created by members using a common language. To search bookees in another language, choose the desired language (top right hand corner of the homepage) and click on “Show all bookees”.

How do I make an advanced search?

To enlarge your search to bookees created in all languages available on Bookeetown click on “Search in all languages”.

How do I use a bookee of another member?

To use a bookee created by another member, simply click on “use this bookee” and it will appear at the bottom of your homepage. You can then use it as is and you can also add your own favorite links to it. If the creator of the bookee has agreed to it, he or she will be informed by mail each time a link is added. He will then decide if he wants to add your link to his bookee so that all users can benefit from your contribution.

Whether he adds it or not, the link you add to his "shared" bookee will be saved by Bookeetown so that it always shows up when you decide to use his bookee. You can therefore securely keep this shared bookee open on your homepage or decide to close it and reopen it another time.

How do I rate a bookee?

Bookeetown invites you to rate the bookees of your fellow members. We use a 5 star system, with 5 being the best. Simply click on the stars to vote. No need to vote more than once as only your first vote will be counted.

What is a tag?

A tag is a keyword that describes a bookee. Bookeetown uses this tool to help manage your bookees. We allow you to choose up to 3 tags for each bookee that you create. You can then modify them at any time to make them more efficient.
Tags reflect the way you think and the image you have of the bookee and are a great way of sharing addresses with other Bookeetown members. The more precise your tags, the easier to find a bookeeeet.
Constantly updated, the list of tags located at the lower left hand corner of Bookeetown’s homepage indicates the key words most frequently used by our members. The size of the letters is another indication of how popular a tag is at any particular time.

How does the date and time appear on my homepage?

Bookeetown automatically synchronizes the date and time on your computer.

Is Bookeetown a free service?

Yes, Bookeetown is entirely free to its members.

Does Bookeetown have access to my password?

Bookeetown has no way of knowing or storing your password. You can therefore create and use it securely.

I forgot my password. What should I do?

Click on the “Forgot my password?” button and enter your email address. We will immediately send you an email making it possible for us to verify your identity and for you to safely choose a new password.

Does Booketown share my email address with anyone?

Bookeetown reserves the right to communicate the email address of its members to its selected partners whose activity corresponds to their centers of interest, so that they may send them specific offers.

What is an “RSS feed”?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, or Rich Site Summary.
RSS feeds are usually used to let you know when a web site that you are interested in has been updated. It is mostly used for information websites and blogs.
When can subscribe to a RSS feed, you can visualize those updates without having to go the website.
By subscribing to Bookeetown’s RSS feeds, you are automatically notified as soon as new bookees are added to the site.

Can I share my bookees securely with other Bookeetown members?

Each time you create a bookee, we ask if you would like to share it with other members of Bookeetown. If you accept, all Bookeetown members will have access to it and will be able to add new sites to it, but your email address will never be revealed to anyone. You can therefore share your best addresses securely and your confidentiality will always be respected.

Will I be notified when other Bookeetown members use my bookees or add new sites to them?

All Bookeetown members who share their bookees are given the possibility of being informed by email each time a member is adds one or more sites to the original bookee. Once informed, only the creator of a shared bookee can decide to add  the new sites to his bookee so that all members can benefit from it.

How can I find my city’s weather forecast?

Bookeetown uses the international weather services of www.weather.com, which provides forecast for the whole world. If your location is not on the list, enter the name of the nearest large city.
Click on Forecast to view the weather for the seven days.

How do I open a new page in a new tab?

It depends on how your browser has been programmed. Here is how to proceed:

For Internet Explorer users:

Go to "tools", then "Internet Options", then "General", then "Tabs". Click on "Settings" and make sure that the line "Always open pop-ups in a new tab" in the paragraph "When a pop-up is encountered:" is activated. Click on "OK".

For Firefox users:

Go to "tools", then "Options", then "Tabs". Make sure that the line "A new tab" in the paragraph "New pages should be opened in:" is activated. Click on "OK".
